A Travel Guide to Croatia
Croatia is located in southern Europe, with a beautiful Mediterranean coastline. Croatia is known for its stunning beauty, with a variety of natural attractions to enjoy. Over the years, Croatia has become extremely popular with tourists and this popularity continues to grow.
Because of its natural beauty, the Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the most popular places for visitors to the county. The park stretches for almost 300 square kilometres and offers visitors the chance to see the beautiful lakes and waterfalls, with pathways that take guests right between the lakes. There is also a huge variety of wildlife here, Bears, Wolves, Golden Eagles and even the Lynx, which is a rare sight in Europe.
Croatia is not without its historic attractions and perhaps none are as popular and impressive as the Walls of Dubrovnik. The Walls were built in the 14th century and surround the former city-state of Dubrovnik. They remain in excellent condition and visitors can explore the walls and their fortifications. During the Middle Ages the fortification was never breached by an enemy army and this makes it one of the best fortifications of the age.
Another of Croatia’s impressive attractions is the Pula Arena. One of the worlds largest and best preserved Roman amphitheatres, the Pula Arena is a rare and stunning example of ancient Roman architecture. Built in 27-68AD and once used as an arena for the Gladiators, the arena is still used today, albeit for a different kind of entertainment. The impressive structure has played host to concerts by Sting, Elton John and Tom Jones to name but a few.
The Island of Mljet is an island and National Park sitting just off the south coast of the country. Over 80% of the Island is covered in forest and there are some small villages dotted around the Island. One of the islands most interesting features is the Monastery of Saint Mary, sitting on a tiny island in the middle of a lake. The island is very beautiful and well worth making the trip.
There is a large choice of self catering holiday accommodation in Croatia with a selection of villas and apartments on the Mediterranean coast and holiday cottages in the beautiful countryside.
