A Travel Guide to Torrevieja
Located in the Province of Alicante in the Orihuela Costa, Costa Blanca Region of Spain, Torrevieja like a lot of tourist destinations on this coast started out as a fishing village and takes its name from the Spanish for old tower, one of the coastal watchtowers the village was built around.
Over the years Torrevieja has become a popular tourist area due to its beautiful pristine waters and the blue flag beaches of Playa de Los Locos, Playa del Cura, Playa de Acequion, Playa de los Naufragos and Playa de la Mata. Torrevieja is an ideal holiday destination for families.
As well as the beaches there are two local aqua parks, Aquopolis which is the largest and Flamingo, both are very popular and provide an ideal destination for visitors of all ages.
There are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants in the Torrevieja area and on a Friday there is a popular local market. The Habaneras Shopping Centre is a large commercial centre with numerous shops, restaurants and a cinema
To the north and south of Torrevieja are the salt lakes of Laguna Salada de Torrevieja and Laguna Salada de la Mata where the visitor can see Flamingos in their natural habitat as well as a host of other wildlife.
Torrevieja offers a large selection of water sports such as wind surfing, para-sending, para gliding, surf kiting, diving and water skiing. There are several marinas in Torrevieja, the Marina Internacional de Torrevieja being the largest where the visitor can enjoy a drink or a meal overlooking the yachts.
Torrevieja has an excellent sports centre called the Palacio de los Deportes with an Olympic size swimming pool and tennis courts.
Torrevieja is also popular due to its colorful festivities and celebrations; one of which is the annual competition of Habaneras and Polyphony an international choral competition held in July.
There is a wide variety of self catering holiday accommodation in the Torrevieja area ranging from a variety of cheap and luxury holiday apartments to large private villas with swimming pools.
